Bamboo WarkaWater tower harvests potable water from air…….

On a recent trip to Ethiopia, Italian designer Arturo Vittori discovered how collecting water is both dangerous and time-consuming – especially for women and children.

Life in the dry northeastern corner of Ethiopia is hard. Women must often walk long distances to find water for the family, and small children forced to come along are thereby kept out of school. This of course perpetuates the poverty cycle.

Inside, a mesh bag of sorts traps humidity from the air.

About 28 feet tall and framed like a basket, the tower is constructed with easy-to-source natural materials such as bamboo or reed framework in a basket-like shape.

The tower could also be equipped with a solar-powered LED, which would provide security and light at night, so maybe children can study, and a place for the community to gather for special events.

Ruben van Hooidonk, Ph.D., from the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami and NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, told Science Daily. Instead, they are likely to experience annual bleaching by 2056 based on data taken from current climate models.

Equipped with safety belts, protective seating and a spot for a wheelchair bound person, the pod is meant to stay afloat while waiting for rescue teams.

It is accessed either through the main door positioned above the waterline, or through a roof mounted hatch.

The structure is easily transportable and occupies a single car parking space.

Design & Survive: Conference

We are DRS06, of the Interior and Spatial Design course at Chelsea College of Art. Led by Robin and Debra as our tutors.

As DRS 06, we specialise in designing for disasters. Whether its problem solving pre or post-disaster. We base our research on past experiences, trying to find solutions and to be ready for the future. We take on a wide range of disasters, from natural to social ones.

From this conference, we are hoping to raise awareness on the disasters, and explore possible solutions.
